Track Stats – Big, Big Week

March 29th, 2010 · 1 Comment

In track and field, we measure performance by victories and by measurement against certain standards, which is why you see frequent references to our Top Ten List and to PR’s or Personal Records.

Each week in practice, we honor the event winners from dual meets and top then finishers from the big weekend meets.  But we also honor those who have succeed against certain statistical standards.  The first the GHS All-Time Performers List or the Top Ten List.  These are the ten best performers in each event in the 53 years of GHS track and field.  Already this year, we’ve had 6 athletes put themselves on the list for the first time, joining 4 others who were already on the list from the previous weeks. APU/MOC: Anthony Gets the Record!

March 29th, 2010 · 1 Comment

The Tartans turned in a slew of great performances at Saturday’s prestigious Distance Meet of Champions, led by junior Anthony Castro’s 9:16.71 in the 3200 – good for 7th in one of the toughest fields in the nation, and setting 2010’s first GHS School Record – breaking the old mark of 9:19.74 by Sean DiFilippo from 2003.

Anthony ran with the leaders for the first half of the race, and when the eventual top six finishers broke away at 2000m, Anthony drove the chase group to the end, finishing with a 62 second last lap for his record.

Earlier in the day, four other Tartans turned in particularly strong performances.  In the Frosh/Soph Invite 1600, Austin Mendoza displayed a strong drive over the final lap to finish 4th in a big PR of 4:29.03.  In the earlier heats of the 3200, juniors Kelly Hernandez and Lauren Justus turned in big PR’s, with Lauren’s 11:18.62 moving her from 5th to 2nd on the GHS All-Time Performers List, while Kelly’s 9:36.67 puts him 5th on the list.  The morning’s invite heat of the 800 saw Austin Goodheart finish 5th (video here) behind the nation’s top two performances with strong 1:56.57.

Saturday: MOC and Chino Relays

March 26th, 2010 · 1 Comment

This Saturday, our distance runners will complete in the Meet of Champions at Azusa Pacific University.  This is a huge meet, beginning at 7:30am and ending around 10:00pm.  Last year at this meet, Chris Ramsey (‘09) PR’d by six seconds and broke the existing meet record by two in finishing second to the eventual State Champ with a 1:53.15 in the 800.  At the end of the day, Corey Bullock (‘09) broke into the GHS AT-Top Ten in the 3200.

In this year’s event, three athletes are in feature events.  Senior Austin Goodheart is the third seed in the 800 – which should be run around 9:50am, while soph Austin Mendoza is also the third seed the Frosh/Soph 1600 at 2:20pm.  At the end of the day, at 10:00pm junior Anthony Castro will step to the line in loaded invite heat of the 3200.

At the same, many of our sprinters and and field event athletes will take part in the Chino Relays at Chino HS.  This is a low key, fun, relay oriented event – with some rarely run events like the 8×100 and 8×200 relays.

Walnut: Great Progress

March 19th, 2010 · 1 Comment

Our whole team competed in the same meet on Thursday against Walnut High School. Walnut is a strong team and many of our best athletes were held out of the meet due to injury or competition the next day, with the result that our guys lost 89-39 and the girls 81-54.  Nevertheless, our very young team made great progress, with many athletes making big strides as they learn to compete.

Our top performer among the girls was junior Lauren Justus.  She was a double winner in the 1600 (5:42.10) and the 3200, where she put up a PR 11:41.15, while keeps her 5th best GHS All-Time Performer.  Senior Hayley Cooke also doubled, winning both of the hurdles (17.66/51.74).  Our 4×100 of Amie Jepsen (So), Joanna Kantiok (So), Hayley, and Makayla Jacoub (So) also won and moved from 10th to 6th AT GHS with their 51.46 win.  Other winners were seniors Valerie Brain in the High Jump (4′6″) and Taylor Oberlander (800 – 2:33.33).

Among the boys, our winners were soph Austin Mendoza (800 – 2:04.56), junior Shin Yamamura (1600 – 4:43.20), senior Brad Beckwith (Shot – 42′4″ PR) and our 4×400 relay, which closed out the night led by a big carry from senior Chris Gribble.

You can view meet results here, but there appears to be a few mixups in the results.  More to follow.
