Nearly 100 Tartans officially began their track and field careers today. Looking sharp in our new uniforms and warmups, our athletes brought home fists full of awards from the event.
The top performer was frosh Mikayla Jacoub, who was second in the 100, third in the 200, and first in the 400. Her 100 time would have advanced her to last year’s Sierra League finals, as would the efforts of Joanna Kantiok (3rd) and Shawn Miller (4th). Other top five finishers among the girls were frosh Brenna Green (4th – 100 hurdles) and Amie Jepson (4th – triple jump).
The top performers for the boys were freshman Austin Mendoza and soph Dillon Downard. Austin scored a pair of narrow second places in the 1600 and 3200, while Dillon was 2nd in the 400 and 3rd in the long jump (along with top ten finishes in the 100 and 200). Just behind Austin in placing but not honor was David Reber (Fr), 4th and 3rd in the 1600 and 3200. In the field events, Trevor Elliott was third in the shot while James Henderson and Casey Kalen were 3rd and 4th in the high jump.
GHS results are here and complete meet results are here.
Also today, senior Corey Bullock kicked off his season running a 5000 meters race in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton against open and college athletes. Corey’s time (15:52.48) was a little below expectations, but it was great to see him back on the track after serious lung problems erased his ‘08 track season and leg injuries dogged him during XC last Fall. Also in the race were GHS assistant coach Ben Mejia (15:37.04) and Tartan alumnus Joey Divizia (‘08) who, representing the hosts, ran a fine PR 14:42.87.
