A record 99 Tartans took part in Saturday’s Sierra League Prelims at Diamond Bar HS. A total of 70 athletes either advanced to Thursday’s final or completed the final in their event on Saturday. At the end of the day, we had 5 top three finishes in the day’s four finals, led by soph Christina Villalobos’ win in the JV Girls 3200m with a PR 13:53.10.

Other JV or F/S “medalists” (medalists is in quotes because our league won’t award medals to JV and F/S athletes) were soph Ross Brunett (2nd, 3200m – PR 10:24.78), frosh Cristiana Perez (3rd High Jump – PR 4′6″) and frosh Hannah Nelli with two “medals” – 2nd High Jump – PR 4′8″ and 3rd Pole Vault =PR 7′6″.

We had a series of strong performances from our Varsity athletes who advanced. Seniors Austin Goodheart (800m), Alex Ostrowski (110mH & 300mH), Cameron Duffy (100m), and Brad Beckwith (Discus) all won their heats or flights, Alex with a 14.85 PR in the highs (remaining 4th AT GHS) and Brad with a big 151′10″ PR, which moves him to 6th on the GHS All-Time Performers List. We also had wins from juniors Anthony Castro and Kelly Hernandez in the 1600, and PR 26.60 200m heat winner from soph Makaya Jacoub, who remains 8th AT in that event. Two others had All-Time List performances: soph Joanna Kantiok – 12.70 100m, moves to 3rd on the list while senior Hayley Cooke to =6th in the 100mH with a 17.18.

On Saturday, about 60 Tartans will join athletes from over 50 schools at the Covina Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.

This is always a strong meet for our athletes, with our boys winning the team title two years ago. Last year, Chris Ramsey (‘09) won the 800 going away, and was joined in the medals by senior Austin Goodheart (2nd – 1600), Corey Bullock (‘09, 2nd – 3200) and Catherine Chidester (‘09, 3rd – Discus).

This year, with so many strong athletes in multiple events, the boys will contend for the team title. Austin will look to move up a place in the 1600, and new GHS 3200 record holder Anthony Castro will move down to the 800. Cameron Duffy and the short relay will be looking to step into elite status on APU’s fast track, while the balance of our team should expect great performances.

You can download a meet schedule with a list of Tartan competitors here: GHSCovInviteTimeSchedule-1

The Tartans hosted our first home meet on Tuesday, with both the boys and girls teams going down to defeat to league favorites Damien and St.Lucy’s. The guys lost 86-49 while the girls were on the wrong end of a 88-48 score.

The top girls performer was soph Makayla Jacoub, who won the pole vault (8′0) and the 200 with a fast (for our track) 27.79. Other events winners were soph Joanna Kantiok (100 – 13.22), senior Taylor Oberlander (800 – 2:32.23), and senior Valerie Brain (discus – PR 95′10″).

The guys were led by single wins from senior Derrick Erwing (400 – 52.96) senior Austin Goodheart (800 – 2:06.53), junior Kelly Hernandez (1600 – 4:46.49), junior Anthony Castro (3200 – 10:02.15) and senior Bubba Ostrowski (long jump – 20′10″). Our only statistically significant performance came in the 4×100 relay, where the 44.21 effort turned in by seniors Chris Gribble, Erwing, Cameron Duffy and Jordan Lopez moved them from 10th to 9th on the GHS All-Time Performers list.

Dirt tracks are slower than all-weather surfaces, so many athletes found their times a little disappointing. Only one new athlete (Matt Zern – F/S long jump) hit the Sierra League Standards, while the team gained 8 more spots to raise us to 57 athletes qualifying for 119 spots. At the same time, many of our first year athletes now have the required four meets to establish a Personal Record, so Tuesday saw 34 Tartans establish 38 new PR’s, led by double PR’s from junior Kevin Clould (shot, discus), soph Laura White (long & triple jump) and Val Brain, whose bests in the high jump and discus left her just outside the AT Top-Ten.

Complete results are here.

In track and field, we measure performance by victories and by measurement against certain standards, which is why you see frequent references to our Top Ten List and to PR’s or Personal Records.

Each week in practice, we honor the event winners from dual meets and top then finishers from the big weekend meets. But we also honor those who have succeed against certain statistical standards. The first the GHS All-Time Performers List or the Top Ten List. These are the ten best performers in each event in the 53 years of GHS track and field. Already this year, we’ve had 6 athletes put themselves on the list for the first time, joining 4 others who were already on the list from the previous weeks.

We also measure ourselves against the Sierra League Qualifying Standards. Each member school is allowed three entries into each event at May’s Sierra League Championship meet, but additional entries are allowed if all meet the standard. One of our team goals is to have 70 athletes (about 1/3 of our team) achieve the standard. Through the weekend, 56 athletes have qualified for 111 spots, so we are already most of the way to our goal. Eleven athletes qualified last week, and you can view a complete list of the qualifiers and the standards here: SierraQuals-3-27.pdf

Finally, our sport’s clear measurements allows athletes to compete against themselves, which is why we put a great deal of emphasis on setting Personal Records or PR’s. We recognize new PR’s each week, tracking all of our athletes’ performances on our team’s statistical site at Athletic.net. You can see the team rankings under the link “Event Records” and there’s also a link for “Athletes Season Performances“. You can view an athletes complete career performances by clicking anywhere his/her name appears. (Our standard is that an athlete needs to have competed in an event four times to establish a PR). Last week, 53 athletes established 69 new PR’s. You can view the complete list here: PR – ChinoHills-DMOC.pdf

The Tartans turned in a slew of great performances at Saturday’s prestigious Distance Meet of Champions, led by junior Anthony Castro’s 9:16.71 in the 3200 – good for 7th in one of the toughest fields in the nation, and setting 2010’s first GHS School Record – breaking the old mark of 9:19.74 by Sean DiFilippo from 2003.

Anthony ran with the leaders for the first half of the race, and when the eventual top six finishers broke away at 2000m, Anthony drove the chase group to the end, finishing with a 62 second last lap for his record.

Earlier in the day, four other Tartans turned in particularly strong performances. In the Frosh/Soph Invite 1600, Austin Mendoza displayed a strong drive over the final lap to finish 4th in a big PR of 4:29.03. In the earlier heats of the 3200, juniors Kelly Hernandez and Lauren Justus turned in big PR’s, with Lauren’s 11:18.62 moving her from 5th to 2nd on the GHS All-Time Performers List, while Kelly’s 9:36.67 puts him 5th on the list. The morning’s invite heat of the 800 saw Austin Goodheart finish 5th (video here) behind the nation’s top two performances with strong 1:56.57.
